A brain is, when you get to a certain level, just a shitton of neurons, synapses, neurotransmitters and some other basic parts. I have the belief that a brain is just a natural, insanely complex computer. You are the gatekeeper for your own life.ĭepends on what your view of the human brain is. It might cause you some problems and some stress, but you are the ultimate arbiter of your life, and their continued involvement in your life is only with your permission. That even if you don't cut them off, it is by your choice that you don't and not because they have any power over you. But maybe it'll give you some inner comfort/satisfaction just to know that you could. If they don't respect your boundaries or your decisions, it doesn't matter what their relationship to you is, or how much authority they have with you, or even whether it would cause a "breach in the family." You do not have to allow them to be part of your life unless you choose to, and no rational person in the world would ever judge you harshly for cutting someone out of your life who doesn't respect your boundaries-even if the people you're cutting out of your life are family.Īnd I know it's always going to be more complicated than that, and maybe you don't want to go that far yet-that's fine, you don't have to. That being said, even if it's a whole branch of the family or even the community and even if they are authority figures over you, you get to choose who is part of your life and who isn't.
Family stuff is tough, and there's always a feeling of obligation to stick together even when you're being wronged.
I understand why that would be difficult on you.
